The Beach in November: Part 1

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Experiencing the lowest temperature of the year today, 19 degrees, made me long for a warm day in the sun. I'm already ready to ditch the parka, seven layers of sweaters, and knee socks for shorts and flip flops. Even though there's nowhere to go within many, many miles to experience a tropical beach day, if you're struggling through the cold while craving the sand, surf, and sunshine, I would suggest the following.
Throw on all those layers and drive to the most beautiful park you can find within a half hour of where you live. I'm lucky enough to be a short drive from Lake Michigan, but even if you can't access the shoreline, taking a brisk walk in nippy air has just as many salubrious effects as a hot beach.
Come home after an hour and warm yourself a mug of tea to select one of the following activities to recreate the beach in the comfort of your own home.

1. Sea Salt Hairspray:
-1 cup hot water
-2 tbs epsom salts
-1/2 tsp Himalayan or Sea salt
-1 tsp aloe vera gel
-1/2 tsp conditioner
-a few drops of essential oil
-optional: 1 tsp lemon juice if you want to lighten your hair

2. DIY Beach Photo Booth:
-hang some sea shell wallpaper or blue construction paper on the wall
-shine a lamp on the screen to mimic the sun
-set a camera up on a perch with a timer
-start posing in your favorite swimsuit

3. Sew your own swimsuit for the hot tub
-follow the link to find a monokini and bikini pattern
-drive to your nearest fabric store to buy a yard or two of bright spandex
